EKU Online Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Colleen Schneck ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA

Dr. Colleen Schneck serves as professor, department chair of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and part-time associate dean.

How long have you been at EKU?

I have been at EKU for 21 years. During that time I have served as the graduate coordinator and as the post professional graduate program coordinator. I have taught courses in Pediatrics, School Based Practice and in Early Childhood but also many of the other courses offered including research, administration and theory.

Why did you choose this field?

As a senior in high school I participated in the work study program as a nurses aid at the Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, NJ. It was while I worked there that I learned about occupational therapy and the role of OT’s in pediatrics. During this time I became very interested in working with children with disabilities, and I knew OT was a great career match for me.

What are your areas of expertise?

School-based practice, early intervention and pediatrics.

What do you like most about teaching?

I enjoy working with students who are excited to learn and watching them grow as professionals. I also enjoy that teaching requires you to be up to date on the current research and practice that can then be shared with the students.

Do you teach online as well as on-campus? How do you engage your online students?

I have taught on-campus and online for many years. Now my duties are mostly administrative but I very much enjoy teaching the courses that I can. I engage students online through voice thread discussions and being available for mentoring OTD students with projects.
